The Sanctuary here is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. Birds from Siberia, Australia and even North America can be spotted here on tiny islands in the sanctuary. A ride in the cane boats across the small islands is a great experience. One can see birds at close quarters.

Air : The nearest airport is Bangalore (125 Kms).
Rail: The nearest railhead Mysore (18 Kms).
Road: Ranganthittu lies on the Bangalore- Mysore State Highway. One can reach here from either Bangalore or Mysore.
Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is situated on the banks of the Kaveri River. It consists of a group of six islets. The efforts of noted ornithologist, Dr Salim Ali, transformed Ranganthittu into a bird sanctuary in 1940. The sanctuary is an important nesting and breeding ground for migratory birds such as spoonbills, open bill storks, darters, white Ibis, little cormorants, egret, heron, partridge, river tern, stone plougher, snake bird among others.
Best time to visit
The sanctuary is quite cool through the year. The temperature is between 23 and 29°C. In monsoon, the place is filled with water. The best time is between December and June, when birds fly in from other parts of the world.
