An interesting legend on creation of Kerala has it that, Parasurama, the warrior sage regarded as the incarnation of Vishnu, created this land for the Brahmins. After meditating at Gokarnam (now part of Karnataka) and being blessed with boons from Varuna and Bhoomi Devi, the God of Oceans and the Goddess of Earth respectively, Parasurama went from Gokarna to Kanyakumari and threw his axe northwards across the water of Arabian Sea. And the land that rose from the sea till where the axe lay was called the land of Parasurama that is today's Gods Own Country Kerala.

Geologists from the marine theological studies have proved that the landmass of Kerala was the result of a seismic activity. Today's agro climatic landscape, backwaters and waterlogged tracts, which cover one third of the total land, was a gradual evolution of nature.

Another version of the scientific society is that the rivers of Kerala emptying into the Arabian sea bring down enormous quantities of silt from the hills. The sand, which was transported back towards the shore by the ocean currents and the accumulation of silt in many years, formed the land of Kerala.

The first recorded history of Kerala appears in the inscriptions of the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka (269-232 BC). Ashoka refers the independent Kingdoms of Cholas, The Pandyas, the Keralaputhras and the Satyaputras. Among them Keralaputhras or Cheras, reigned over Malabar, Cochin and North Travancore (all parts of present day Kerala).

The earliest inhabitants of Kerala were Pulayas, Kuravas and Vetas. The Aryan population migrated from the North. The decline of Cheran Dynasty led to the rise of Brahmins in Kerala. By 10th Century the mighty Brahmins became very powerful and with their money power segregated the classes of people, which gave rise to the caste system.

The Christians who arrived in Kerala in 3rd Century and Muslims in 8th century were generally traders. Jews also arrived in Kerala during early years of Christian era and were more powerful. Kerala gradually entered a phase of warlords (Naduvazhis). The prominent ones were Zamorin of Calicut (North) and Moopins of Perimpadappu (Central).

In 1498, Vasco Da Gama, the Portuguese naval captain found the way to India by bribing an Arab pilot when his ship was anchored at Port Malindi off Kenya. India was known as a land of Gold and spices. The European exploration ship Sao Gabriel which landed in Kappad near Calicut influenced the history of East. Portuguese did manage to convert some communities into Latin Catholics and today this community is one of the influential sections in Kerala.

In 1602, the Dutch East India Company was established and by 1663 Dutch drove out Portuguese with the help of Zamorin. Dutch dominated Kannur and Kochi area. By 1799 British drove out the Dutch, weakened after the defeat in 1741 by Marthanda Varma, King of Thiruvithamkur. Pazhassi Raja in North Kerala and Velu Thampi Dalawa in Central Kerala mainly opposed the British entry.

Portuguese and Dutch brought the agricultural crops like Papaya, Tapioca, Rubber and Pineapple into the country.

The freedom struggle started in Kerala in 1922 by students against the fee hike. Many eminent personalities in Indian freedom fight from Kerala are, AK Gopalan, VK Krishnamenon, K Kelappan, KP Kesavamenon, AV Kuttimalu Amma, K Karunakaran, EMS Namboodirippad, Muhammad Abdulrahiman Sahib, K Kunhirama Kurup and so on.

After independence, a new state "Thirukochi" was formed on 1st July 1949. Malayalam speaking regions of Malabar and Thirukochi joined together as one state on 1st November 1956 and named it Kerala. 1st November is celebrated as Kerala Piravi (Birth Day of Kerala).
